About Glenfarclas Distillery ;
Glenfarclas is listed as one of the oldest distilleries in the Speyside region. Glenfarclas is also one of the few distilleries where the pot stills are still heated with direct fire, which results in a heavier profile. Another tenacity is the maturation in ex-sherry casks. The Glenfarclas Distillery's location at the foot of Ben Rinnes ensures that it is situated in a cooler microclimate limiting the "Angel's Share" to 0.05% where the industry average in Scotland is 2.5%.

The name 'Glenfarclas' means; valley of the green grass, a reference to the wealth of meadows that surround the distillery. The distillery farm, which, like so many old buildings before the Excise Act of 1823, is believed to have served for illegal distillation, was active from the late 1790s to 1988. After the excise act was introduced in 1823, it took another 13 years before original owner Robert Hay obtained a license. When Hay died in 1865, his neighbor John Grant bought the distillery and has kept it in family hands ever since for 6 generations.

This family continuity has enabled Glenfarclas to continue to practice an older way of whiskey making, largely because it continues to be a successful business. George Grant, the sixth generation, once stated that they've been through 22 recessions at Glenfarclas, we make what we can afford and never borrow money to earn it. When the entire industry was scaling back production in the 1980s, it increased at Glenfarclas. When the market rebounded Glenfarclas had enough share to sell, both a share for the blend industry and a significant share for their own single malts. This has resulted in Glenfarclas having a larger quantity, matured and aged stock than most distilleries. It has all contributed to maintaining a strong brand identity.

Retaining direct fire to heat the stills has been done away with for quality reasons and the belief that the character of the new make is much more powerful to work in this old way and just now needs a rich character to deal with the tannin structure and rich fruitiness of ex-sherry casks.

Today, all the wood for the barrels comes from the Miguel Martin cooperage located in Jerez and contains a mix of “butts” and “hogsheads”, all ex-Oloroso from European Oak. The core range is a mix of first and refill kegs. Glenfarclas' innovation shows itself in 2007 with the release of "The Family Casks", a series of vintage releases from each year between 1952 and 1998, starting today with 1954. Who can imitate them?

Glenfarclas also claims to have pioneered cask strength bottling when it launched its first 105 proof in 1968. They were also one of the first to open their doors to visitors in 1973. The belief in single malts has grown over the years also paid off, but judge for yourself whether the quality speaks for itself!
